The Northern Tropic of Cancer Flagship Project Creates Eight New Tourism Highlights
The Northern Tropic of Cancer Flagship Project (2026–2029)—Smiling South Bay in Taiwan integrates tourism resources across cities and counties in southern Taiwan through the themes of the "Northern Tropic of Cancer" and "Smiling South Bay." The Northern Tropic of Cancer axis follows the Tropic of Cancer, linking Penghu, Chiayi, Nantou, Hualien, and Taitung to form a tourism corridor along the 23.5-degree latitude. The Smiling South Bay axis extends from the southwestern coast to the east coast, integrating accommodations, attractions, national parks, and national scenic areas to establish a new tourism framework for southern Taiwan.
The project will be carried out in two phases over a four-year period. It comprises 10 flagship initiatives and 68 specific development projects, integrating core resources such as the Penghu Archipelago, the Alishan Forest Railway, and sunrise cloud seas. The project connects the natural, ecological, historical, and cultural heritage from Taijiang to Alishan and from Penghu to the East Rift Valley, creating eight new international attractions that showcase Taiwan’s tourism appeal and local character.
