The Economic Impact (Tourism Satellite Accounts)

Taiwan’s 2015 and 2016 Tourism Satellite Account was compiled based primarily on the 2015 and 2016 Tourism Satellite Account produced in accordance with the TSA 2008 (The Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008) as developed by the UNWTO and other international organizations. The commercial services included in the tourism expenditure account for the 2015 and 2016 accounts are: Traveler accommodation services, food and beverage services, traveler transportation services (consisting of land, air and water passenger transportation services), car rental services, travel agency services, entertainment and recreation services, and shopping services. Tourism spending in Taiwan is further divided into the three categories of outbound tourism, domestic tourism (including one-day and overnight trips), and inbound tourism. According to the 2015 Taiwan Tourism Satellite Account, tourism spending that year reached approximately NT$1.097 trillion. Inbound tourism spending amounted to NT$552.08 billion, accounting for the largest share, followed by domestic tourism spending at NT$403.16 billion, (comprising NT$148.68 billion for oneday trips and NT$254.47 billion for overnight trips), and outbound tourism spending at NT$141.41 billion. Among the spending on tourism services in 2015, transportation services took the largest share at 25.71%, followed by food and beverage services at 23.72%, shopping services at 23.58%, and accommodation services at 9.13%. According to the 2016 Taiwan Tourism Satellite Account, tourism spending that year reached approximately NT$1.104 trillion, inbound tourism spending amounted to NT$520.9 billion, accounting for the largest share, followed by domestic tourism spending at NT$431.29 billion, (comprising NT$162.15 billion for one-day trips and NT$269.14 billion for overnight trips), and outbound tourism spending at NT$151.79 billion. Among the spending on tourism services in 2016, food and beverage services took the largest share at 25.75%, followed by transportation services at 25.23%, shopping services at 21.74%, and accommodation services at 9.42%.

In 2015, Taiwan's tourism direct gross value added (TDGVA) was approximately NT$16.711 trillion, constituting 2.64% of GDP that year. Tourism generated employment for 420,374 people, the majority of whom were employed in tourism industry jobs, followed by those employed in the catering industry, and close behind that by employment in the accommodation services industry.

In 2016, Taiwan's tourism direct gross value added (TDGVA) was approximately NT$17.134 trillion, constituting 2.66% of GDP that year, tourism generated employment for 433,482 people, the majority of whom were employed in tourism industry jobs, followed by those employed in the catering industry, and close behind that by employment in the accommodation services industry
