- Surveys, research, and overall planning related to tourism resources; response to climate change issues
- Assessment and review of scenic area designations; designation of sightseeing areas
- Planning of national scenic areas; facility construction at, management of, and marketing for national scenic areas; encouraging private investment in infrastructure construction at national scenic areas
- Support for the planning, construction, operation, and management of sightseeing areas and regional sightseeing infrastructure
- Formulation and amendment of regulations related to scenic areas; designation of natural, cultural, and ecological scenic areas; formulation and interpretation of regulations governing professional guides at the aforementioned scenic areas
- Support for and oversight of the development and construction of municipal, county, and city level scenic areas and sites
- Review of hot spring area management plans; oversight of and provision of assistance to local governments in the management of enterprises that obtain or provide hot spring water as well as in matters related to the hot spring mark
- Formulation, amendment, and interpretation of regulations for water sports and activities; management and oversight of water sports and activities at national scenic areas
- Formulation, amendment, and interpretation of regulations governing campgrounds, campsites, and camping areas; oversight of and provision of assistance to local governments in managing the aforementioned venues
