The Global Travel Market

According to the World Tourism Organization, global international travel hit a record high in 2019. Taiwan joined the boom, attracting more than 11.86 inbound visitors that year, and in the process writing a proud new page in the tourism sector. The Tourism Bureau also continued to develop more tourism markets, such as South Korea, Malaysia, and Europe, in order to create a more diversified and sustainable tourism environment in Taiwan.

Overview of the Global Tourism Market

The number of international tourist arrivals worldwide (overnight visitors) grew by 3.6% to 1.460 billion in 2019. North Africa (+8.5%) saw the fastest growth in international arrivals, followed by Southeast Asia (+7.2%), Caribbean (+7.1%), and the Southeast Asia (+6.7%). The Asia-Pacific region expanded by 3.7%, higher than the global average.

Overview of Asian Tourism Markets

In 2019, Korea was the fastest growing inbound market for visitors from Asia (+14%), followed by Taiwan (+7.21%). Hong Kong, Japan and Korea were the main tourism source markets for Taiwan as the country maintained close exchanges throughout Asia.
