Since 2018, JK-Goods International Co., Ltd. has been entrusted with the management of Heping Island GeoPark in Keelung, operating with “sustainable tourism” as its core philosophy. Under the leadership of its founder and managing director, Huang Wei-chieh , Heping Island GeoPark has been transformed into a world-class sustainable destination that balances ecological conservation and cultural experiences. It became the first national-level attraction in Asia to obtain ISO 20121 certification for event sustainability management systems and has been awarded the Green Travel Seal (GTS) for three consecutive years.
In 2024, with guidance from Unity Sustainability Services , Heping Island GeoPark took its sustainability efforts a step further by conducting a greenhouse gas inventory. The British Standards Institution (BSI) was commissioned for an external verification, leading to Heping Island GeoPark’s successful acquisition of ISO 14064-1:2018 certification. This makes Heping Island GeoPark the first national scenic area in Taiwan to receive such certification. The inventory scope included direct greenhouse gas emissions within the park, purchased electricity, and indirect carbon emissions from resource and fuel procurement, waste management, and transportation—aiming to enhance overall carbon management efficiency.
Heping Island GeoPark’s vendors and facilities have also achieved significant milestones in the practice of sustainable tourism. For example, the park engages in initiatives such as encouraging vendors to apply for Green Declaration Restaurant and Eco-Friendly Restaurant certifications; promote low-carbon dining; implement plastic-free business models; and offer locally sourced cuisine to minimize environmental impact while providing visitors with delicious meals. Additionally, the park’s select shop, through green procurement and brand collaboration, has been awarded the “Buying Power Procurement Award ,” showcasing its commitment to supporting sustainable consumption.
Furthermore, Heping Island GeoPark actively promotes various plastic and carbon reduction initiatives. These include the establishment of a packaging-free store, offering eco-friendly bath salts and shampoo bars, and launching a reusable cup program to minimize single-use waste. The park also integrates ecological tours with environmental education, allowing visitors not only to admire breathtaking geological wonders but also to learn about the importance of environmental protection during their journeys.
Looking ahead, Heping Island GeoPark will further advance its carbon reduction and carbon neutrality initiatives in pursuit of net-zero emissions. We sincerely invite travelers to join the movement for low-carbon tourism and contribute to the sustainable preservation of Heping Island’s natural resources and historical heritage. Together, let’s make every trip a force for local development and environmental protection!
