Q5: What is the jurisdiction of the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area?
The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area was founded on May 15, 2002. It covers three former provincial scenic areas including North Coast, Yeliu and Guanyinshan, with a total area of approximately 12,351 hectares; a land area of about 7,940 hectares and asea area of 4,411 hectares. The administrative areas are divided into seven districts including Wanli, Jinshan, Shimen, Sanzhi, Wugu, Bali in New Taipei City and Keelung. It is mainly known for its special features such as culture, geological topography and coastal landscapes, especially the Queen's Head in Yehliu, which in addition to being a famous tourist scenic spot in Taiwan and well known internationally, has also strived to become a world geopark in recent years.
In addition, scenic spots such as Waimu Mountain, Lover's Lake and Heping Island in Keelung City have a land area of 487 hectares and a sea area of 243 hectares, totaling 730 hectares. Since they are also important tourist scenic spots on Taiwan’s north coast, they were made part of the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area on December 15, 2014. The total area is now of 13,081 hectares after expansion (land area 8,427 hectares; sea area 4,654 hectares).
The scenic area borders Yangmingshan National Park to the south, Tamsui to the west, is adjacent to the Northeast Designated Scenic Area along with Keelung to the east, and faces the vast ocean where the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea meet in the north. The area has rich tourism resources, including internationally renowned Yehliu geopark. The area has ecological landscape and recreational resources with coastal and mountain features, diverse cultural characteristics, and convenient transportation, which make it an excellent place to develop tourism and recreation in northern Taiwan.
