Did you know that many fallen forest trees are carried by streams into the ocean, where they drift with the tides (becoming “driftwood ”) and are often washed ashore. Although frequently seen as natural debris, driftwood does not have to remain a “drifter” in nature—it can be transformed from coastal waste into useful resources or even innovative works of art.
With its unique natural forms, driftwood can be crafted into art or creative handicraft. By leveraging the characteristics of various types of driftwood, it can be repurposed into functional furniture or exquisite decorations, unlocking limitless potential for reuse. This not only gives the weathered wood new life but also turns it into something extraordinary.
This year, following three typhoons that swept across Taiwan and the impact of northeastern monsoons, the coastlines under the jurisdiction of the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Headquarters (of the Tourism Administration, MOTC) have accumulated significant amounts of driftwood. Thus, the New Taipei City Government has officially announced the opening of driftwood collection starting today, inviting the public to give these “drifters” a new purpose.
In addition to the immediate opening of driftwood collection, long-term beach cleanup activities are also being held. As residents of an island nation, protecting the marine environment and the stunning coastal landscapes is our shared responsibility. Beach cleanups not only raise awareness about safeguarding our planet and ocean ecosystems but also ensure the sustainability of life and travel. The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Headquarters welcomes all Taiwanese resident and businesses to join it in preserving the beauty of the North Coast, where they can admire scenic views while protecting the Earth.
