The auspicious 2023 Global Green Destinations Day Conference was held on October 8 in Tallinn, Estonia, the Green Capital of Europe., and the "2023 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories" were awarded at an evening party on October 9, local time. Taiwan once again performed well, with all six destinations participating in the Green Destination Competition and Certification Program, winning Green Destinations story awards. Hsieh Chang-ming, director of the Frankfurt Office of the Tourism Administration accepted the awards. This year more destinations from Taiwan participated in the competition than at any time in the past eight years, and twice as many awards were won as in 2022, which was the focus of this year’s Global Green Destinations Day Conference.

Zhou Yonghui, Director-General, Tourism Administration, MOTC, expressed his gratitude to the international community for recognizing the National Scenic Area Headquarters in Taiwan. Coinciding with the upgrade and restructuring of the Tourism Administration, in the future, each management office will continue to uphold the two main focuses of scenic area development - "safety management" and "sustainable management." We will conduct local operations attentively, strengthen the collaborative governance of regional tourism and tourism circles, and seek to promote local tourism through “scenic area economics," while continuing to promote sustainable tourism and strive for more honors on the international stage.

The following is an introduction to the awards and sustainability stories of the Northguang National Scenic Area Headquarters:

Story theme: A Path Toward the Hideaway: Creating Access to the Hideaway Beach in Alapawan Through Sustainability Practices

Entry Category: Destination Management

Hepingdao Geopark has a special geological landscape, but it is also at risk of frequent rockfalls, which led to the closure of Alapawan for more than 10 years. However, in 2021, Northguang National Scenic Area Headquarters started working with university geology and ecology professors and local management teams and through  a combination of academic research, the introduction of professional technology, the implementation of ecological construction methods, the management and openness of local management teams, and the participation of local volunteer guides, Alapawan was safely reopened and the biodiversity of the intertidal zone gradually improved. As a result, the most beautiful sunrise in the world could once again be experienced and the smiles on the faces of tourists and local residents were restored.
