The M1-40 twin-barrel anti-aircraft gun displayed at the Sanshan Stronghold on Dongyin Island is decommissioned equipment formerly used by the Republic of China Armed Forces. In 2020, Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters of the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, carried out landscape improvement projects in the Dongyin area and included the Sanshan Stronghold in its renovation program. The project involved refurbishing the gun platform, overhauling the rotation mechanism, and reconstructing the exterior of the gun barrels using FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic). In addition to serving as a military exhibit, the installation also provides visitors with an interactive military experience.
Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters explained that prolonged exposure to salt-laden sea mist had caused damage to components of the gun's rotating mechanism, rendering it inoperable. Since the installation is decommissioned military equipment, replacement parts are no longer available, making restoration particularly challenging. After extensive consultations with specialized contractors, on-site inspections and disassembly work were carried out. The damaged components were successfully refurbished, and the facility was reassembled to restore its rotational function. In addition, rust spots on the exterior were removed and the structure was repainted. The newly restored twin-barrel anti-aircraft gun is now back in service and will once again serve as a military tourism attraction for visitors starting today.
Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters stated that the maintenance and management of facilities throughout the scenic area must overcome the challenges posed by the offshore island environment. Despite these constraints, the agency will continue striving to improve and optimize its services and infrastructure, providing visitors with a safer and more comfortable tourism experience.
