The “2026 Glimmering Matsu – Sunrise Welcome & Hiking Event” is organized by the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters (Matsu NSA), Tourism Administration, MOTC, in collaboration with the Beigan Township Office, Beigan Township Representatives Council, and the Beigan Defense Command. The public is invited to ascend Matsu’s highest peak—Bie Mountain in Beigan—on January 1, 2026, to greet the first sunrise of the new year. Participants will shout out their wishes and goals for the coming year, then hike to Tangqi Sports Field for a flag-raising ceremony to welcome the new year with vitality and renewed energy. Promotional souvenirs will be prepared on-site, along with a performance by Drumacue and a cheering ceremony at sunrise. Registration for the “Morning Cheer” session opens at 12:00 PM on December 8 (Monday). Spots are limited—everyone is welcome to sign up enthusiastically!
Standing at 291.7 meters, Bie Mountain is the highest point in the Matsu Islands and one of the best viewpoints in the region. From the viewing platform, visitors can overlook Houwo Village beneath Dawu Mountain, Beigan Airport, Tanghou Beach, bustling Tangqi Street, and surrounding islands, including Luoshan, Bangshan, Wuming Island, Qiaotou, Daqiu, and Xiaoqiu. The sight of airplanes arriving and departing at Beigan Airport with the sea and sky as the backdrop creates postcard-like scenery. The sunrise is breathtaking, and during misty seasons the mountaintop transforms into a dreamlike landscape, as if stepping into a fairytale. It is the ideal destination to welcome 2026 and a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts.
During the period of cross-strait military confrontation, Beigan served as a critical frontline, and Bie Mountain remains dotted with bunkers and military structures. Even today, it holds strategic significance over the Matsu waters and preserves a rich historical heritage with strong tourism appeal. Visitors attending the 2025 New Year’s Eve celebration are encouraged to take the shuttle boat to Beigan and charge up Bie Mountain at dawn for the 2026 sunrise welcome!
