As spring deepens, the nights at Sun Moon Lake are set to shimmer with countless flickering fireflies. The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as the Headquarters) has officially launched the “2026 Sun Moon Lake Starry Firefly Season” in April, with events running through May 31. In collaboration with local associations, the Headquarters has curated a series of immersive itineraries that combine eco-guided tours, Indigenous culture, and low-carbon travel experiences. Visitors from Taiwan and abroad are invited to experience nature's most heart-stirring moments on nights when starlight and fireflies intertwine.
Diverse Firefly Viewing Spots: From Forest Trails to Lakeside Adventures
This year’s firefly map spans eight locations, including Taomi, Dongguang, Shuishe, Toushe, Tannan, Danda, Dalin, and Lianhuachi. Visitors will have the chance to observe a rich variety of species, such as the black-winged firefly, giant black-tipped firefly, yellow-margined firefly, and Sauter’s firefly. Each site offers experiences shaped by its local character. In Taomi and Dongguang, in addition to firefly and frog watching, visitors can take part in discovering local fish and shrimp, pine-needle weaving DIY, and hands-on farming activities. Toushe, themed “Glowing Lights, Dancing Romance,” features professional eco-guided tours, waterway exploration, and experiences in its unique living basin landscape. Shuishe brings a fresh approach by combining cycling tours, the increasingly popular stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and Taomi’s fish and shrimp exploration into a series of micro journeys. Visitors venturing deeper into the Tannan and Danda tribal areas can enjoy traditional hunter’s lunchboxes and immerse themselves in Bunun cultural experiences through indigenous fragrance making and plant-based fabric dyeing.
Low-Carbon Travel and Exclusive Offers
To promote low-carbon travel, the Headquarters recommends that visitors take advantage of the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s Sun Moon Lake Route and Checheng Route, paired with the “Sun Moon Lake Fun Pass” electronic travel pass for a convenient and seamless journey. During the festival period, a number of local accommodations and specialty businesses, including the Sun Moon Lake Teacher’s Hostel, Fullon Poshtel Shuili, Cona’s Chococastle, and Skyfish Cheese Cake, will offer exclusive promotions for the firefly season. In addition, visitors can take part in the 2026 Sun Moon Lake Cycling Certification event. By completing designated cycling routes and tasks, participants can receive a limited-edition seasonal medal.
The Three “No” Principles for Firefly Viewing
Director Wang Chih-yi of the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Headquarters also reminds visitors that fireflies are highly sensitive to their environment and can only thrive in areas free from light pollution, with clean water and fresh air. When viewing fireflies, please follow the three “no” principles: do not disturb, do not catch, and do not harm. Flash photography should be turned off, and if a flashlight is necessary, it must be covered with red cellophane to minimize disturbance. Visitors are advised to wear long-sleeved clothing and non-slip shoes, and to follow the guidance of eco-guides to observe the fireflies up close without disrupting the ecosystem.
