When Typhoon Haikui made landfall in Donghe, Taitung, the live video surveillance camera, set up by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration Office (also known as the ECNSA Administration Office or ECNSA Headquarters), witnessed the astonishing power of the typhoon. While the camera lens was obscured by the heavy rain, the relentless crashing of waves against the coastal rocks and the camera swaying in the strong wind captivated over 10,000 online viewers. However, the live video feed was abruptly interrupted by the gusty winds around 1 o'clock, and viewers were greeted with the message "live video maintenance in progress". Those who were too late to see the real-time images exclaimed that it was “pity” not being able to see it and even “mourned” the camera for “falling in the line of duty”. Nevertheless, the ECNSA Administration Office explained that the camera was not broken and that the interrupted image was probably caused by power outage across the area due to the strong wind.
Comparing to the strong wind and heavy rain in the east, Central Taiwan has not experienced apparent wind or rain since yesterday. The camera set up by the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area Administration Office (hereinafter referred to as the Office) in Hushangyan of Changhua has remained in place and captured the amazing view of the flammagenitus clouds around 6 p.m. The sky was ablaze in a beautiful shade of red.
Director of the Office, Tsao Chung-yu, stated today that, since mountain areas can experience heavy rainfall and falling rocks during typhoons, people are advised not to venture into the mountains. He also mentioned that the Office would dispatch personnel to inspect the Shitoushan, Lishan, and Baguashan trails today and, if the weather clears up tomorrow, the Office will open access for people. Director Tsou also reminded people that they can view live video images from the mountain areas through the cameras installed in Lishan and Hushanyan.
