Dapeng Bay Creates “Yunguang Island,” Taiwan’s First-ever Large-scale, Electricity-free, Self-illuminating Nighttime Art Installation

To promote sustainability and environmental protection, Dapeng Bay has created “Yunguang Island,” Taiwan’s first-ever large-scale, electricity-free, self-illuminating sculpture in Qingzhou Bay. Inspired by the Net Zero concept, this art installation extends Dapeng Bay’s artistic environment from daytime into the night.

Yunguang Island utilizes special materials that absorb solar energy during the day and emit light at night without electricity to meet sustainable environmental goals. By day, it serves as a family-friendly recreational leisure space. At night, it becomes a self-illuminating art installation for visitors to admire and interact with (by sending wishes through light using their mobile phones). Yunguang Island will transmit visitors’ wish to the stars and provide them with blessings!

Artist Chen Yu-liang, the designer of Yunguang Island, shared that the inspiration for it came from the “Yingwang Peace Festival” held every three years at the Donggang Donglong Temple. Rooted in the tradition of praying for one’s hometown, the design integrated local culture and sustainability while extending into whimsical virtual stories and characters. Yunguang Island conveys a vision of coexistence and harmony between humanity and the environment through public art, offering blessings for a better future.

Yunguang Island features four “cloud islands,” each with its own theme and island steward. Stories are used to introduce visitors to Donggang’s local tourism, marine conservation, sustainable fishery, and eco-friendly agriculture.
